The town of Aveiro lies on the edge of a wide, lagoon-like bay and was once the center of salt production. The city is crisscrossed by canals on which the so-called moliceiros, colorful fishing boats, glide along.
On the coast lies the picturesque Costa Nova. An extremely colorful seaside resort, where one wooden house follows another, alternately painted with white and colored stripes. Fishermen built these pile dwellings, the so-called "palheiros", which served as shelters or to store their tools. After their restoration, they have become pretty vacation homes.
